The college football transfer season is in full swing, with several notable players making moves across the country. For the Mississippi State Bulldogs, quarterback has officially entered the transfer portal, and his new destination will make the situation even more painful for the team. He started eight games for Mississippi State, putting up impressive stats, including 1,886 passing yards and 11 touchdowns, along with 69 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. However, he struggled with turnovers, throwing seven interceptions. Despite these challenges, the talented QB demonstrated his great potential and decided to transfer in search of further development in his career. He has chosen to join one of Mississippi State’s biggest SEC rivals, as Van Buren officially committed to the LSU Tigers on Sunday.
“BREAKING: Mississippi State True Freshman transfer QB has committed to LSU, he tells On3Sports. The 6’0 200 QB totaled 1,886 Yards & 11 TDs this season (9 games) Will have 3 years of eligibility remaining,” reported Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports on X, previously known as Twitter.
Although LSU will have Garrett Nussmeier returning as their starting quarterback for the 2025 season, it will be his final year with the team, meaning the Tigers will eventually need someone to step into the role. That future quarterback could potentially be Van Buren. While it’s unlikely he will play a significant role in LSU’s plans for 2025, there’s a chance he may redshirt as he adjusts to his new team. It’s also important to remember that Van Buren wasn’t initially expected to play at Mississippi State this season, but an injury to Blake Shapen thrust him into action. With his impressive potential, this move could have long-term benefits for the Tigers. For now, though, LSU’s main focus is finishing the current season strong with a victory over Baylor in the Texas Bowl.
