HUGE BLOW: virginia tech hokies confirm more bad as Top superstar enter transfer portal

Virginia Tech has been heavily affected by the transfer portal, and today they faced another setback. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Chance Fitzgerald announced on social media that he will be entering the transfer portal and leaving the team.

Though Fitzgerald didn’t see much playing time with the Hokies, the team can ill afford to keep losing players at this pace. However, it’s not all negative news for Virginia Tech this week regarding the transfer portal. Head coach Brent Pry revealed earlier that quarterbacks Kyron Drones and Pop Watson will not be entering the portal and will return next season.

Our own RJ Schafer explored the significance of Drones’ return for Virginia Tech in 2025:

“Drones’ return means a lot, but most importantly, Virginia Tech retains its most important offensive player with eligibility remaining. The Hokies have lost nearly all their offensive line, Bhayshul Tuten, and their top three receivers, but Drones will return.

This is happening as Virginia Tech looks to revamp its roster in coach Pry’s fourth year. Drones’ skill as a quarterback shapes the identity of the Hokies’ offense, which has mainly focused on running the ball. With the departure of key receivers like Da’Quan Felton and Jaylin Lane, it’s expected that the offense will remain similar. Had Drones not been injured this year, he likely would’ve matched or exceeded his 2023 production of 818 yards and five touchdowns. Over his career, he’s averaged 4.4 yards per carry, which could keep the offense in a similar direction for 2024.

While Drones only passed for 1,562 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions last year, his strength is not his arm, and that’s perfectly fine for the Hokies. Virginia Tech gets to maintain its offensive identity with Drones back and Pop Watson gaining experience under a seasoned college quarterback.”
