The University of Houston product, drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, will step in for Pro Bowl left tackle Terron Armstead during Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans.
This game is crucial for Miami’s playoff hopes as they fight for the final AFC wild card spot. Unfortunately, Armstead isn’t the only starting offensive lineman dealing with a significant injury. Kendall Lamm, who replaced the starting left tackle after Jackson’s season-ending knee injury six weeks ago, is now struggling with a back issue. Lamm only practiced once on Friday and apparently did not impress the coaching staff, which led to him being inactive
Jackson Carman is expected to take his place, making him the Dolphins’ third starting right tackle this season. Additionally, Miami promoted Ryan Hayes from the practice squad, making him active for the game. Hayes, a seventh-round pick in 2023, has had a turbulent NFL career over the past two seasons. There’s also a possibility that the Dolphins could use Isaiah Wynn as a backup tackle, a position he initially played in the NFL.
Armstead has been battling knee pain since training camp and hasn’t practiced in over a week, but he had been able to play on Sundays until last week when he had to pull himself out after just a few snaps in the first two offensive series. Paul, who is 6-foot-7 and 332 pounds, stepped in for Armstead and showed significant improvement from his first start, which came in a 31-12 loss to the Tennessee Titans, when Armstead was sidelined by a concussion. Offensive coordinator Frank Smith noted Paul’s progress, emphasizing that the key to his development has been refining his fundamentals and increasing his sense of urgency each week.
This could be the toughest test the Dolphins’ offensive line faces this season, as the Texans have racked up 42 sacks, the second-highest total in the NFL. Miami’s tackle situation may force them to adjust their game plan, although quarterback Tua Tagovailoa usually gets rid of the ball quickly. A loss to the Texans would significantly hinder Miami’s chances of surpassing the Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos, and Indianapolis Colts for the final AFC playoff spot. Also inactive for the game are running back Jeff Wilson Jr., tight end Jack Stoll, receiver Dee Eskridge, cornerback Ethan Bonner, and defensive tackle Neil Farrell.
