Is it time for the Tennessee Volunteers to be concerned about their wide receiver situation for 2025? With the transfer portal officially opening on Monday, several players have already declared their intention to transfer for next season.
Now, four Tennessee wideouts have informed head coach Josh Heupel of their plans to move on. On Thursday, Nathan Leacock and Nate Spillman became the latest to announce they’ll be transferring. While they didn’t make significant impacts this season, it’s still concerning from a depth perspective:
Previously, Kaleb Webb and Chas Nimrod entered the portal, and now Spillman and Leacock will join them. In 2024, Spillman, standing 6-2 and 200 pounds, had no receptions for the Vols, while Leacock had just one catch for 13 yards.
While these two departures aren’t game-changers, losing four wide receivers in one offseason is far from ideal. Additionally, the graduation of Bru McCoy further weakens the offense.
Heupel will likely turn to the portal to bolster the receiving corps, as more weapons will be necessary for star quarterback Nico Iamaleava. However, before focusing heavily on recruiting, the team must remain focused on the immediate challenge ahead.
Next weekend, the Vols will head to Columbus to face Ohio State in the first round of the College Football Playoff, with an upset on their minds. While the transfer portal activity might serve as a distraction, Tennessee is staying focused. The prospect of Vols fans taking over The Shoe only adds intrigue to the matchup.
