The Rule 5 Draft is currently underway in Dallas at the Winter Meetings, involving players who are not on a team’s 40-man roster but have been with their organization for more than five seasons since turning 18 or younger.
The Blue Jays have selected right-handed pitcher Angel Bastardo from the Boston Red Sox in the Rule 5 Draft. Bastardo, who was most recently playing for the Red Sox’s Double-A affiliate, will cost the Blue Jays $100,000. To retain him, they must keep him on their 40-man roster for the entire season. If they decide to remove him, they must offer him back to the Red Sox for $50,000 before making any other moves.

Despite a rough 2024 season, with a 5.36 ERA and a 0-5 record in 45.1 innings, the 22-year-old Bastardo shows potential. However, he is recovering from Tommy John surgery and will miss a significant portion of the 2025 season due to his recovery.
