Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy is among those who will miss top super starin a Brewers uniform. Recently, Murphy shared a strong endorsement of Adames after the San Francisco Giants reportedly signed him.
Murphy, who had previously expressed that he didn’t expect the veteran shortstop to return to the Brewers next season, provided insight into what Adames brings to the table. The Brewers typically trade players before they reach free agency to gain value, and although Adames struggled at the plate last season, there was trade interest in him during the offseason. Milwaukee chose to hold onto him despite knowing he’d leave via free agency after 2024. They had attempted to negotiate a long-term extension but couldn’t reach an agreement.
The Brewers will receive a compensatory draft pick since Adames rejected a qualifying offer earlier in the offseason, assuming he passes his physical. Giants fans may be anxious until that happens.
Murphy’s remarks emphasize the kind of player the Giants are acquiring. During Adames’ time in Milwaukee, the Brewers made the playoffs in three out of four seasons, including 2024, Murphy’s first year as manager, when they won 93 games but were eliminated by the New York Mets in the Wild Card series.
Adames has proven himself in key moments, though his playoff experience, mostly with the Tampa Bay Rays, had its ups and downs. He notably went 4-for-7 in the 2023 Wild Card round against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
As Murphy mentions, Adames is also a leader, a sentiment echoed by Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, who highlighted his positive impact both on and off the field. It seems Adames will quickly become a fan favorite in San Francisco, much like Logan Webb and Matt Chapman. While the Giants still have work to do this offseason, they appear to be adding a well-regarded and skilled player.
