HUGE BLOW: Guardians Starting Pitcher Sign With Division Rival

On October 9,the starting pitcher took the mound for the Cleveland Guardians in Game 3 of their 2024 American League Division Series against the Detroit Tigers.

Two months later, it appears Cobb was pitching in what could be his new home ballpark.

According to MLB Senior Writer Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the free-agent Cobb has reached a one-year agreement with Detroit, pending a physical examination.

Cleveland had acquired Cobb from the San Francisco Giants just before the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline, sending left-handed pitching prospect Jacob Bresnahan and infield prospect Nate Furman to the Giants in return. Furman was later confirmed as a player to be named after the trade was announced.

After a rehab start with the Triple-A Columbus Clippers, Cobb made three regular season starts for Cleveland, posting a 2-1 record with a 3.76 ERA. He struck out 10 batters while walking just three in 16.1 innings of work.

The 37-year-old also made two postseason starts for Cleveland during their run to the 2024 American League Championship Series.

His first was against Detroit in Game 3 of the ALDS, where he took the loss after allowing three hits, two earned runs, one walk, and one intentional walk, along with two strikeouts in three innings. Five days later, he started Game 1 of the ALCS against the New York Yankees but suffered another loss, giving up five hits, three earned runs, and three walks while recording three strikeouts in 2.2 innings.

Cleveland had expressed interest in bringing Cobb back, but it seems he is set to join a division rival in Detroit for the upcoming season.
