The Buffalo Bills squandered an incredible performance by quarterback Josh Allen on Sunday, allowing the Los Angeles Rams to score in a 44-42 loss.
This defeat significantly impacted Buffalo’s chances of overtaking the Kansas City Chiefs for the No. 1 seed, though the team is still in the playoff hunt after securing the AFC East title last week.
One analyst suggests that the Bills should consider adding an All-Pro defensive back to improve their defense.
Bills Urged to Sign Former Rival
Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report recommended the Bills pursue 31-year-old free agent cornerback Xavien Howard, formerly of the Miami Dolphins. Ballentine pointed out that the Bills have a solid shot at a Super Bowl this season and could benefit from small defensive improvements.
“This might be the week the Bills seriously consider adding another defensive back,” Ballentine wrote. “This team is on the verge of a Super Bowl run, but a few adjustments could push them over the edge.”
Ballentine also noted that signing Howard would be an affordable way to strengthen the defense. He highlighted Howard’s solid performance last season, allowing a passer rating of 81.3 when targeted in 2023.
While the Bills’ defense has been generally strong this season, they’ve shown vulnerability against high-powered offenses, allowing 44 points to the Rams and 35 to the Baltimore Ravens.
Bills Bring Back Another Veteran Defensive Back
The Bills have already taken steps to improve their secondary by re-signing veteran safety Micah Hyde to their practice squad. Hyde had previously hinted at a potential return, and Bills GM Brandon Beane had indicated they would be open to bringing him back.
Head coach Sean McDermott clarified that Hyde’s role is to add depth, not because of struggles within the current safety group.
“Just to set expectations, Micah is in a practice squad role,” McDermott explained. “We’re confident in Taylor Rapp, Damar Hamlin, Cole Bishop, and Kareem Jackson. They’ve all been performing well, and they’ll remain in their current roles. It’s great to have Micah back, and we’re happy for him and his family.”
Hyde expressed his readiness to support the team’s younger players and help them develop, whether on or off the field. He’s also available for game elevation if needed, with three opportunities remaining in the regular season and additional chances during the playoffs.
“I just wanted to come back and do anything I could to help,” Hyde said. “Whether it’s mentoring younger players or assisting the veterans, I’m here to help in any way. I’m ready for this new role and excited to excel.”
