The NFL community has been rocked by the three-game suspension of Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair following his tackle on Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The suspension was appealed, but it was upheld, meaning Al-Shaair will miss the next three games.
There has been a lot of debate over the decision, but San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel defended his former teammate.
“I know Azeez very well, and it wasn’t intentional,” Samuel said, according to Bleacher Report via Sideline Sarah. “I know him personally. He played here for four years, and in practice, we had him, Fred [Warner], and [Dre] Greenlaw—three of the hardest hitters I’ve ever seen. That’s just how it was every day. The clip doesn’t reflect who he is as a person. If I were him in that situation, with someone hitting the back of my head, I’d go into defense mode. I just think three games is a bit too much.”
While Al-Shaair serves his suspension, the Texans will play the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at 12:00 PM CT at NRG Stadium.
