The Philadelphia Phillies are looking to make changes to their roster this offseason. All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm is a strong candidate to be traded after his struggles during the team’s shortened postseason run. Could president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski use Bohm as a key piece to acquire starting pitcher Luis Castillo and more from the Seattle Mariners? Bohm, coming off a strong 2024 season, could provide the Mariners with a significant upgrade at third base. He finished with a career-best .779 OPS, hitting 15 home runs, 44 doubles, 97 RBIs, and 62 runs in 606 plate appearances. Meanwhile, Castillo would be a valuable addition to the Phillies’ pitching staff, likely replacing Taijuan Walker, who had a disappointing 7.10 ERA over 83 2/3 innings in the second year of a four-year, $72 million contract. Since signing a five-year, $108 million extension with the Mariners before the 2023 season, Castillo has posted a solid 3.48 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 394 strikeouts, and one All-Star appearance in 372 1/3 innings. So, what might a trade between Seattle and Philadelphia look like? Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer has proposed a potential deal:
– Phillies receive: right-handed pitcher Luis Castillo and shortstop Cole Young
– Mariners receive: third baseman Alec Bohm “A Castillo-for-Bohm swap would free up valuable money Seattle could use to pursue other needs. Young would be a sweetener for the Phillies, and he could even replace Bohm at third base at some point in 2025,” Rymer wrote. MLB.com ranks Young as Seattle’s second-best prospect. He spent his 2024 campaign in Double-A, slashing .271/.369/.390 in 552 plate appearances.
