Huge blow: The Guardians lose yet another talented baseball mind to Cardinals

The Cleveland Guardians have consistently followed a strong approach at the organizational level for years. They regularly hire skilled and well-prepared individuals for their baseball operations and player development teams. This strategy yields positive outcomes on the field, but as seen this year, other teams frequently poach some of their talent, forcing the Guardians to seek new options.

In late October, the Guardians lost Rob Cerfolio, their director of player development, to the St. Louis Cardinals, who offered him the role of player development director along with an assistant GM position. This was a significant loss for Cleveland. Additionally, the Cardinals continued to target Cleveland’s staff, and on Thursday, they hired Larry Day as their new farm director.

“Cleveland #Guardians lose Larry Day to the #Cardinals as they have named him the organizations new farm director. Day a former manager, coach and field director over the past decade with Cleveland was hired by former Guardians farm director Rob Cerfelio. Cerfelio was recently hired as the Cardinals new assistant general manager,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.

Larry Day spent the past two seasons as the assistant field coordinator in Cleveland. Prior to that, he served as the player programs coordinator from 2020 to 2022, and managed the Arizona Complex League team in 2018 and 2019, as well as the Lake County Captains in 2017. Earlier in his career, he was a minor league hitting coach in 2015 and 2016. In St. Louis, Day will play a significant role, directly influencing player development decisions.
