The Boston Red Sox are aiming to strengthen their starting rotation this offseason, with a particular focus on acquiring a left-handed pitcher. They have already seen two left-handed pitchers, Blake Snell and Yusei Kikuchi, sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels, respectively. This leaves the Red Sox with two top-tier left-handed options remaining. One is Max Fried, the ace of the Atlanta Braves, who is a free agent. Fried was a high school teammate of Boston’s Lucas Giolito. The other notable left-handed pitcher available is Garrett Crochet, the ace of the Chicago White Sox. According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Red Sox are expected to target Crochet in a major trade this winter.
“The rebuilding White Sox are committed to trading Crochet in an effort to acquire controllable everyday players who improve their offense for both the short term and long term,” Bowden wrote. “They match up well with teams like the Orioles and Dodgers but maybe match up the best with the Red Sox. A package led by Gold Glove-winning right fielder Wilyer Abreu, first baseman Triston Casas, and catcher Connor Wong is probably close to what would work for both teams.”
The Red Sox and White Sox are a strong match for this trade. However, it’s unlikely that Boston would part with more than one of the three major league players that Bowden mentioned. In all likelihood, the trade would involve one of those players along with a group of prospects to acquire Crochet. This type of deal would make sense for both teams.
