The Kansas City Royals have agreed to a minor-league contract with infielder, as reported by Robert Murray of FanSided. Groshans was once the No. 12 overall pick by the Toronto Blue Jays and most recently played in the Oakland A’s organization.
Selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2018, He was later traded to the Miami Marlins in exchange for Zach Pop, Anthony Bass, and a player to be named later, who turned out to be Edward Duran. Groshans made his MLB debut with the Marlins in 2022, playing in 17 games and posting a .262 batting average (16-for-65) with a 76 OPS+ (where 100 is league average).
He remained with the Marlins until 2024, when the New York Yankees claimed him off waivers in February. Groshans started the season in Triple-A, batting .228 with a .302 OBP over 17 games, before being sent down to Double-A Somerset.
At that point, the Yankees and A’s made a trade, with J.D. Davis going to New York and Groshans moving to Oakland. The A’s assigned him to Double-A Midland, where he hit .239 with a .312 OBP and a .664 OPS in 51 games for the remainder of the season.
Throughout his minor league career, Jordan Groshans has mainly played shortstop and third base, although he has also seen time at second and first. In the past season, the majority of his playing time was spent at third base.
While Groshans likely isn’t part of the Royals’ immediate plans due to the minor-league contract, he is still only 25 years old and was once selected just outside the top ten in the MLB Draft. As recently as 2022, MLB Pipeline ranked him as the No. 80 prospect in baseball, and Baseball Prospectus had him even higher at No. 60.
At the very least, this signing could provide depth for the Royals, and with Groshans’ ability to play multiple positions, he could step in and contribute if needed.
