The Boston Red Sox are coming off their third consecutive non-winning season, finishing 81-81 in 2024. President of baseball operations Craig Breslow is eager to strengthen the starting rotation and is exploring options, including a potential trade with the Seattle Mariners for right-handed pitcher. While the Red Sox have been active in the free-agent market, pursuing outfielder Juan Soto and top pitchers like Corbin Burnes and Max Fried, they may need to turn to the trade market if those players sign elsewhere. Along with Garrett Crochet, whom the Chicago White Sox are reportedly looking to trade, Castillo is a viable target, boasting a more proven track record of success.
What might a possible trade between Boston and Seattle look like? Zach Pressnell of FanSided has proposed the following hypothetical exchange:
– Red Sox receive: right-handed pitcher Luis Castillo
– Mariners receive: outfielder Wilyer Abreu, infielder Chase Meidroth and outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia
Abreu recently earned a Gold Glove and finished sixth in the American League Rookie of the Year voting, having recorded a .781 OPS with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs in 447 plate appearances. Meidroth (11th) and Garcia (12th) are both ranked among Boston’s top 15 prospects by MLB.com. Adding Castillo to the Red Sox roster would bring in a three-time All-Star who has made at least 25 starts each season since 2021, posting a 3.51 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. Castillo is also entering the third year of a five-year, $108 million contract extension he signed with Seattle, which will pay him $24.15 million annually from 2025 to 2027, with a $25 million vesting option for 2028.
