The Philadelphia Phillies recently finished with a 95-67 record, claiming the National League East title for the first time since 2011. However, after an early postseason exit, the team might make substantial changes to its roster. There’s speculation that these adjustments could bring Houston Astros star Alex Bregman to Philadelphia. President of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski, mentioned he is open to exploring ways to enhance the team for 2025.
“I mean, the reality is, we have a lot of good players,” he said on Oct. 15, via MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki. “I think we just have to be open-minded to exploring what’s out there for us, talk to some clubs and see what ends up happening. That process hasn’t started. Sometimes you trade good players for good players.”
Third base is one area of the roster likely to undergo change. Alec Bohm had a standout 2024 season, driving in a career-best 97 runs and earning his first All-Star selection. However, he struggled in the NLDS against the New York Mets, recording a .220 OPS in 14 plate appearances. With trade rumors swirling around him this offseason, Bohm’s potential departure could create a gap at third base for the Phillies.
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report sees the Phillies as a strong potential destination for Alex Bregman through free agency, alongside other possible suitors like the Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, and Detroit Tigers. For the Phillies, swapping Alec Bohm for Bregman seems like a straightforward move, especially with high expectations for the 2025 season. Bregman, a two-time champion with 99 postseason games under his belt since 2016, would be a valuable addition. While signing him would come at a significant cost—The Athletic’s Tim Britton predicts a seven-year, $189 million deal for the 30-year-old—the Phillies are likely willing to pay the price if it brings them their first World Series title since 2008.
