New York Mets fan favorite Pete Alonso to betray Mets for division rival in a deal worth $174M

Mets' Pete Alonso off to slow start offensively

Predicting the New York Mets’ offseason is a challenge. On one hand, many expected them to target top pitchers like Corbin Burnes, Blake Snell, and Max Fried. While that could still happen, Snell has already signed elsewhere, and the Mets have secured Frankie Montas. There’s also the ongoing pursuit of Juan Soto, in which the Mets are heavily involved. However, the future of fan-favorite first baseman Pete Alonso, who is a free agent and reportedly seeking a contract worth over $150 million, cannot be overlooked. If the Mets aren’t careful, they could see Alonso join a team like the New York Yankees or Seattle Mariners, or worse, sign with a National League East rival.

“The (Washington) Nationals have been a popular dark-horse pick for landing Alonso,” Randhawa wrote. “As Washington moves closer to contention following a rebuild, with young stars showing they belong in the Majors and significant financial flexibility this offseason, Alonso could be the star veteran they need to take a big step forward in 2025.”

It would be surprising if the Nationals entered this level of spending, but keep in mind that they offered Juan Soto a contract extension worth over $300 million just a few years ago. Washington has more financial resources than it might appear and is willing to use them. Alonso is within their financial reach. If the Mets allow him to sign with a division rival, they could regret it for the next four to six years.
