Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jerry Jeudy made a statement against his former team, the Denver Broncos, after being traded in the offseason, proving they may have made a mistake in letting him go.
Jeudy, who was traded from Denver to Cleveland on March 13 in exchange for a fifth- and sixth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, had a standout performance on “Monday Night Football,” totaling a career-high nine catches for 235 yards and a touchdown in Cleveland’s 41-32 loss. His 235 receiving yards set a new NFL record for the most yards by a player against his former team.
Much of Jeudy’s success came as a result of the Broncos’ defensive coordinator, Vance Joseph, making a puzzling decision not to have star cornerback Patrick Surtain II cover Jeudy for the entirety of the game. While Jeudy only had two catches for 20 yards when Surtain was defending him, he exploded for seven catches, 215 yards, and a touchdown when covered by other defensive backs, particularly Levi Wallace, according to NextGen Stats.
The decision to not consistently match Surtain against Jeudy raised eyebrows on social media, with fans criticizing Joseph’s coaching decisions. Many pointed to this as one of his worst games of the season, with some even suggesting it was one of the most egregious coaching blunders in recent memory.
Jeudy has been a key player for the Browns this season, leading the team in receptions (54), targets (91), and receiving yards (880). He also ranks tied for fifth in the NFL in receiving yards.
