The Vancouver Canucks have faced their fair share of adversity in the 2024-25 season, with challenges ranging from a cancer diagnosis, bereavement, a unique hockey injury, to an indefinite personal leave of absence. These difficulties have been so varied and numerous that at times they feel almost unreal.
So, it wasn’t too surprising when Filip Hronek suffered an injury in the final minute of a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins last Wednesday. This injury only added to the drama of the Canucks’ season, which feels like it could have been scripted for a Hollywood hockey movie.
Losing Hronek, one half of one of the NHL’s top defensive pairings, is undoubtedly a significant setback. After a career-best season that earned him a lucrative contract, Hronek had been performing well again this year before the injury.
A Long-Term Absence Seems Likely One frustrating aspect for fans and the team is the uncertainty surrounding Hronek’s injury and recovery timeline. The only information available, shared by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, suggests it may be a shoulder issue and could result in an extended absence.
Further updates, reported by Noah Strang of the Daily Hive, came from Friedman and TSN’s Darren Dreger. Friedman, during a Monday appearance on Donnie and Dhali, emphasized that it’s too early to speculate about the injury’s severity, as the Canucks and Hronek are still working to pinpoint a precise recovery timeline. However, he reiterated his belief that Hronek’s absence is unlikely to be brief, with the fact that Hronek is meeting with several doctors suggesting the seriousness of the injury.
Dreger’s Update Dreger, speaking on TSN’s Sekeres and Price segment, mentioned that Hronek is either scheduled to see a specialist soon or has already done so, which will help determine the outlook for both the short and long term. He clarified that, at this stage, Hronek is still considered week-to-week. This cautious approach from Dreger reflects the uncertainty surrounding the injury.
Canucks in Limbo At this point, the Canucks find themselves in a difficult position with Hronek. Until they have a clearer understanding of his condition, they cannot make a decision about placing him on long-term injured reserve. This would affect their ability to pursue a quality defenseman in the trade market, although such players are in limited supply.
Moving Forward While the Canucks continue to cope with Hronek’s absence, they’ve managed to stay afloat without key players like Thatcher Demko and J.T. Miller, winning the last two games without Hronek. However, with so many key players sidelined, there’s growing concern that the team may be reaching its breaking point.
