Several college football teams wrapped up their seasons on Saturday, as the regular season came to a close with a dramatic rivalry weekend.
The Auburn Tigers finished the 2024 season with another tough loss to in-state rival Alabama in the Iron Bowl. This marked their fifth straight defeat to the Crimson Tide, and it also resulted in Auburn being knocked out of bowl game contention.
After Saturday’s defeat to Alabama, Auburn faced more disappointing news with two quarterbacks reportedly deciding to enter the NCAA transfer portal.
According to On3 Sports, Auburn quarterback Holden Geriner and Hank Brown will enter the transfer portal on Dec. 9 when the transfer portal window opens.
Brown started two games for the Tigers this season, guiding Auburn to a victory over New Mexico State. However, he was benched in the next game against Arkansas after throwing three interceptions in the first half.
Over the course of two seasons, Brown completed 27 of 43 passes for 403 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions. The 6-foot-4, 208-pound quarterback joined Auburn as a three-star recruit in the 2023 class.
Update (2 p.m. CT): Hank Brown has denied reports that he entered the transfer portal. He shared a statement on his Instagram, saying, “All the reports of me entering the transfer portal are not true. I have not entered the portal. Love y’all! War Damn Eagle.”
Geriner appeared in just eight games over three seasons with the Tigers. He completed 9 of 20 passes for 116 yards and one interception. He will have two seasons of eligibility left.
Geriner joined Auburn in the 2022 class under head coach Bryan Harsin. He was ranked as the No. 224 overall prospect and the No. 15 quarterback in the nation, choosing Auburn over Tennessee and Florida State.
As of Sunday, the only scholarship quarterback remaining on Auburn’s roster is freshman Walker White. Senior quarterback Payton Thorne, who has started for the past two seasons, is set to graduate.
In his true freshman season, White appeared in one game, completing 2 of 5 passes for 18 yards against Louisiana-Monroe.
Five-star quarterback Deuce Knight is committed to Auburn, ranking as the No. 27 overall prospect and the No. 5 quarterback in the 2025 class. He flipped his commitment from Notre Dame to the Tigers on October 2.
Knight and White are expected to compete for the starting role next season, while Auburn may also pursue a starting quarterback through the transfer portal this offseason.
