Former San Diego Padres All-Star pitcher reached an agreement with the Seattle Mariners on a minor league contract according to Aram Leighton.
The gifted player who had two separate tenures with the Padres has not appeared in a major league game since his last season with the team in 2021.
He was selected by Cleveland as a first-round pick in the 2010 MLB Draft and was regarded as a top-50 prospect the following year. In July 2011, Cleveland traded him to the Colorado Rockies, where he made his MLB debut that same year. He stayed with the Rockies until the end of the 2013 season, before being traded to the Oakland Athletics in December 2013. Pomeranz spent two seasons with the Athletics before being traded to the Padres in December 2015.
Before being traded to the Padres, Pomeranz spent much of the 2015 season as a reliever with the Athletics. He requested to start for the Padres and eventually earned a spot in the rotation. In 2016, Pomeranz started 17 games for the Padres, finishing with an 8-7 record, a 2.47 ERA, and 115 strikeouts. His strong performance earned him a selection to the MLB All-Star Game, but the Padres traded him to the Boston Red Sox during the All-Star break.
Pomeranz spent the next two and a half seasons with the Red Sox, contributing to their 2018 World Series championship. He had brief stints with the San Francisco Giants and Milwaukee Brewers in 2019 before re-signing with the Padres on a four-year deal after the 2019 season.
As a relief pitcher for the Padres in 2020 and 2021, Pomeranz excelled, posting a 1.45 ERA in 20 appearances in 2020 and a 1.75 ERA in 27 appearances in 2021. However, his 2021 season was cut short due to surgery for a torn flexor tendon. Pomeranz missed the entire 2022 season and began the 2023 season in recovery. A subsequent cleanup procedure limited him to just seven minor league appearances in 2023.
The 36-year-old had short stints with the Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024, after signing minor league contracts with both teams early in the season. In May, he signed a major league contract with the San Francisco Giants, but opted for free agency after the Giants designated him for assignment.
