The Philadelphia Phillies have been speculated to consider a major roster overhaul this winter. While they are expected to retain their core players, All-Stars like Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos have been mentioned as possible trade candidates. Additionally, relief pitchers Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez are set to become unrestricted free agents. Given this, particularly with two key bullpen arms hitting free agency, the Phillies may look to strengthen their bullpen. FanSided’s Christopher Kline has proposed that they target the top reliever available. Scott is to secure a four-year, $65 million contract, according to Spotrac, though he could earn even more due to the competitive nature of his free-agent market.
“Both Hoffman and Estevez are free agents this winter, leaving the Phillies at risk of major losses to a bullpen that could already use a boost. Why not Tanner Scott, the top-ranked reliever in this free agency class,” Kline wrote. “Scott split last season between Miami and San Diego, meaning the Phillies are well and truly familiar with his skill set. The hard-throwing lefty dominated across 72 appearances (72.0 innings), notching a 1.75 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 84 punch-outs.”
Scott would be an ideal addition for the Phillies, provided they address their other roster needs first. Paying over $15 million annually for a closer is a significant investment, especially when there are other reliable options available at a lower cost. However, if the Phillies can make the finances work, Scott remains the top reliever on the market.
