Good news: Dodgers land blockbuster deal for another gifted versatile player

In the past four or five years, the Los Angeles Dodgers have made more free-agent signings and extensions than many teams typically manage over the course of a decade or more. Following their 2024 World Series win, they are signaling to the world that they are far from finished and are aiming to establish a dynasty.

Just days after securing two-time Cy Young award winner Blake Snell with a $182 million deal, the Dodgers have now extended utility player with a five-year, $74 million contract.

“BREAKING: Superutilityman  and the Los Angeles Dodgers are in agreement on a five-year, $74 million contract extension, sources tell ESPN. The deal runs from 2025-29 and includes a sixth-year club option. There’s a $17 million signing bonus and deferred money included,” MLB insider Jeff Passan posted on X.

True to their usual approach, the deal includes a $17 million signing bonus and deferred payments after its completion to help reduce his Competitive Balance Tax (CBT) number. Edman joined the Dodgers this year in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals and has proven to be an important addition to the roster since his arrival.

Edman has been incredibly valuable in his role with the Dodgers

Edman missed several months recovering from right wrist surgery, but still provided the Dodgers with his usual skills and offensive production. In 37 games, he posted a .237/.294/.417 batting line with six home runs, six stolen bases, and a .711 OPS, which is close to his career average of .726.

Once again, Edman’s greatest asset is his versatility. He has the ability to play multiple positions and excel at them. In 2024 alone, he appeared at second base, shortstop, and center field, and over the course of his MLB career, he has also played third base and both corner outfield spots.

Edman is a Gold Glove award winner at second base, which he earned in 2021, and was named the National League Championship Series (NLCS) MVP after his stellar performance helped lead the Dodgers to the World Series against the New York Yankees.

All in all, Edman secured a life-changing contract, and the Dodgers benefit from acquiring a valuable utility player with an excellent glove, speed, some power, and remarkable versatility. It’s a win for everyone.
