Phillies are set to land blockbuster deal for White Sox All Star in exchange of Alec Bohm, Justin Crawford and others

The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly making efforts to trade for Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Garrett Crochet. With Blake Snell seemingly headed to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the competition for the 26-year-old lefty could intensify. The question now is whether president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski can outbid other teams to secure a deal before another team steps in.

The Philadelphia Phillies’ starting rotation is led by Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola, with Cristopher Sanchez and Ranger Suarez providing reliable mid-rotation depth. However, veteran Taijuan Walker is a weak link. In his second year of a four-year, $72 million contract, Walker struggled with a 7.10 ERA over 83 2/3 innings. Replacing him with Garrett Crochet would significantly improve the rotation. Crochet posted a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 209 strikeouts over 146 innings in 2024, earning his first All-Star selection. With Blake Snell likely joining the Los Angeles Dodgers, teams seeking a left-handed starter, such as the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, will now turn their attention to free agent Max Fried. As more left-handed pitchers sign, competition for Crochet will intensify. Should the Phillies make the White Sox an offer they can’t refuse? Chris Landers of FanSided proposed a potential trade deal.

Phillies loaded Garrett Crochet trade still isn't good enough for the White Sox

– Phillies receive: left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet

– White Sox receive: third baseman Alec Bohm, outfielder Justin Crawford, shortstop Starlyn Caba and right-handed pitcher Taijuan Walker

Including Taijuan Walker in the trade package would primarily serve as a way for the Phillies to offload some of his salary. However, the rest of the offer would be quite appealing. Despite his postseason struggles, Alec Bohm earned an All-Star selection in 2024 and drove in 97 runs over 606 plate appearances. MLB.com ranks Justin Crawford (third) and Starlyn Caba (fourth) among the top five prospects in the Phillies’ system. This package could be sufficient to secure two years of team control over Garrett Crochet. That said, Chicago’s general manager, Chris Getz, is unlikely to rush into a deal. He waited until February to trade Dylan Cease to the Padres last offseason in a comparable situation. As teams grow more desperate for a productive left-handed starter, Getz may hold out for a stronger offer.
