The Boston Red Sox are reportedly designating first baseman/outfielder for assignment, according to Robert Murray of FanSided. Smith, who has played for the New York Mets and Washington Nationals in the past, posted a slash line of .237/.317/.390/.706 over 83 games for the Red Sox in 2024. This decision comes as first baseman Triston Casas is set to return from injury on Friday against the Baltimore Orioles.
Smith signed with the Red Sox earlier in the 2024 season. Boston needed depth at first base after Casas suffered a rib injury early in the ’24 campaign, limiting him to just 22 games so far. With Casas now set to return, Boston has decided to move on from Smith.
Red Sox make Dominic Smith roster move
There was a time when many in the MLB community believed that Smith was destined to become a star. He showed signs of potential early in his career, finishing 13th in MVP voting after posting a .993 OPS in 2020 with the Mets.
Smith’s potential was undeniably high, but consistency has been an issue. Since his stellar 2020 season, he hasn’t been able to replicate those results.
It’s unfortunate because the expectations for Smith were high. However, at just 29 years old, he still has the potential to bounce back. Although the Red Sox gave him a solid opportunity, Smith was unable to capitalize on it.
