Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber is embracing the challenge as his team prepares for a crucial series against the Atlanta Braves.
The Phillies return home Friday to begin a four-game series against the Braves after taking two of three games from the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix. Philadelphia dropped Wednesday’s finale 1-0, but the team remains firmly in the National League East race.
Schwarber was asked about the upcoming series and the Phillies’ pursuit of their third consecutive division title. The veteran designated hitter made it clear that the clubhouse is confident heading into the matchup.
Schwarber said the team is “excited for the challenge” and expects the atmosphere at Citizens Bank Park to have a playoff-like feel. He also emphasized that the Phillies cannot afford to change their approach simply because they are facing a division rival.
According to Schwarber, the key will be sticking to the same preparation and execution that has helped the team throughout the season. Rather than trying to do too much, the Phillies want to focus on their at-bats, game plan and execution.
That mindset could be particularly important with the Braves holding the top spot in the NL East. Entering the series, Philadelphia was 79-61 and four games behind Atlanta in the division.
Schwarber has also been a major contributor for Philadelphia this season. Through 134 games, he is batting .240 with 40 home runs, 83 RBIs and 81 runs scored, giving the Phillies one of the most dangerous power bats in their lineup.
The upcoming matchup carries significant importance because Philadelphia will have seven games against Atlanta over the next two weeks. With the postseason approaching, the Phillies have an opportunity to close the gap in the division and put themselves in position for another NL East crown.
For Schwarber, however, the message is simple: confidence is high, but the Phillies must continue playing their game.
“We’re all as confident in ourselves as any other group,” Schwarber said, stressing the importance of remaining disciplined despite the heightened atmosphere.
