The MLB trade landscape is rarely straightforward.
Rumors swirl constantly, often pulling attention in multiple directions. Speculation and mock trades tend to muddy the waters rather than clarify them, adding noise to situations that are already uncertain. The ongoing discussion surrounding Brendan Donovan is a clear example of that complexity.
The St. Louis Cardinals have made Donovan available, and several teams have been connected to him. One frequently mentioned destination has been the Boston Red Sox, though that possibility comes with some notable complications.
Earlier this week, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal cast doubt on the idea of Donovan landing in Boston, pointing out that he’s a left-handed hitter and the Red Sox already lean heavily left-handed at the plate.
“They’ve got one major move left, I think,” Rosenthal said. “If that happens, people will bring up Nico Hoerner. I’m not sure the Cubs are willing to move him. Brendan Donovan is also being discussed, but Boston isn’t necessarily looking to add another left-handed bat at that spot. They’re already pretty left-handed. There’s still a lot that could happen.”
What’s Next for Brendan Donovan?
Despite Rosenthal’s comments, New York Post insider Jon Heyman reported earlier in the week that Donovan remains on Boston’s radar.
“The Red Sox are exploring trades for an infielder,” Heyman wrote. “Isaac Paredes is one option. Cardinals infielder Brendan Donovan is another.”
From St. Louis’ perspective, the specific trade partner matters less than receiving the return they’re seeking. Still, mixed reports like these only add to an already complicated trade market. While the Cardinals hold one of the more attractive trade assets available, it’s unclear whether Boston is truly a viable destination.
If the Red Sox are indeed in the mix, it would strengthen St. Louis’ leverage and create more competition with teams such as the San Francisco Giants and Seattle Mariners. If not, that removes a potential bidder. Ultimately, the Cardinals would benefit from as many interested teams as possible.
