The New York Mets have lost 26-year-old catcher Shawn Ross, who was claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.
According to Heavy.com, the move comes shortly after the Mets designated Ross for assignment as part of a roster adjustment. Toronto quickly stepped in and claimed the young catcher, adding another option to its organizational catching depth.
Ross began the 2026 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates and made his MLB debut, appearing in two games before being claimed by the Mets. He spent most of the season in the minor leagues, where he played 70 games between Triple-A and Double-A. During that stretch, he hit .184 with 13 doubles, 11 home runs and 29 RBIs.
After acquiring him, the Blue Jays optioned Ross to Triple-A Buffalo, meaning he is unlikely to immediately join Toronto’s major-league roster. His addition nevertheless gives the organization additional catching depth behind its current options.
For the Mets, the move represents another change to their catching situation. Ross had only recently joined the organization after being acquired from Pittsburgh, but the club’s roster decisions ultimately left him exposed to waivers.
Toronto’s decision to claim him gives Ross another opportunity to continue developing within a new organization, while the Mets move forward with their revised roster heading into the final stretch of the 2026 season.
