The Miami Marlins have made a notable roster move involving former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher, designating the left-hander for assignment on Sunday, Aug. 23.
King had been in his first season with Miami after spending three seasons with St. Louis. Despite a strong start to his Marlins tenure, the 31-year-old now finds his immediate future uncertain as the organization makes room on its 40-man roster.
The veteran lefty posted a 6-2 record with a 3.99 ERA across 50 appearances for Miami this season. His performance made the decision particularly notable, although his production reportedly declined significantly following an ankle injury.
According to reactions highlighted by Heavy, King struggled after returning from the injury, posting a 10.24 ERA and 8.67 FIP over his final 9.2 innings, while recording only three strikeouts during that stretch.
The Marlins’ decision means King will now go through the designated-for-assignment process. Another MLB club could claim him off waivers, giving him an opportunity to continue his season elsewhere. If he clears waivers, Miami could potentially retain him in the organization and send him to Triple-A.
King originally entered professional baseball after being selected by the Texas Rangers in the 10th round of the 2017 MLB Draft. He eventually made his way to St. Louis, where he spent three seasons before joining Miami.
Over seven MLB seasons and 264 career appearances, King has compiled a 22-16 record with a 3.83 ERA, giving him considerable major-league experience despite the latest setback.
For the Cardinals, King’s departure from Miami is another reminder of the number of experienced pitchers who have passed through the organization in recent seasons. For King, the next few days could determine whether he remains with the Marlins or gets another opportunity with a different MLB team.
