Given their recent activity, the Cardinals once again stand out as a logical trade partner.
Adding fuel to that speculation, Curt Bishop of St. Louis Cardinals OnSI recently reveal another potential trade scenario that would further connect the two organizations. In Bishop’s proposal, Boston would acquire versatile infielder Brendan Donovan, while the Cardinals would receive right-handed starter Brayan Bello and pitching prospect David Sandlin. While hypothetical, the idea highlights how well the needs of both teams could align.
“The Red Sox are willing to part with Major League ready talent, evidenced by the trades they’ve already made with St. Louis,” Bishop wrote. “The Cardinals landed two Major League ready starters in Richard Fitts and Hunter Dobbins, but they could potentially add somebody more proven in a trade with Boston.”
From St. Louis’ perspective, the appeal of Bello is obvious. The right-hander has already shown flashes of top-of-the-rotation potential, combining a power sinker with improving command. While he has not yet fully put everything together over a full season, Bello remains young, controllable, and capable of anchoring a rotation for years. For a Cardinals team looking to reset its pitching foundation, acquiring Bello would represent a significant step in that direction.
Sandlin, meanwhile, would provide additional depth and versatility to the Cardinals’ pitching pipeline. As Bishop noted, Sandlin performed well at Double-A Portland, posting a 5-4 record across 13 starts and four relief appearances before earning a promotion to Triple-A Worcester. “He can be used in multiple roles and add pitching depth to the Cardinals system,” Bishop wrote, emphasizing Sandlin’s potential utility at both the Major League and minor league levels.
For Boston, the decision to move Bello would not be taken lightly. The Red Sox view him as an important part of their future rotation, and dealing him would likely only make sense if the team planned to replace his innings with a more established starter. That possibility has led some to speculate that a trade like this could be connected to Boston pursuing another frontline arm, such as Freddy Peralta or Seth Lugo. If the Red Sox believe they can secure a dependable veteran starter elsewhere, then using Bello as trade capital becomes more realistic.
