The St. Louis Cardinals appear to be heading into a rebuilding phase this offseason.
They’ve already kicked things off by dealing Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras to the Boston Red Sox for a package of prospects, and more significant moves could be on the horizon as they lean further into the rebuild.
Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly reveal second baseman as a potential trade piece, naming the San Francisco Giants as the most likely destination.
“The other thing that makes Donovan such an intriguing trade candidate is that he has pretty extensive experience in left field, and can play pretty much every spot on the diamond,” Kelly wrote. “So you could trade for Donovan with the thought that he will be your second baseman on opening day, while knowing he could shift to first base or left field if a need arises there.

“Additionally, Donovan puts the ball in play pretty consistently, so he’s capable of hitting at just about any spot in the lineup, be it for Tony Vitello or anyone else.”
The Giants could use another versatile player like Donovan. He would be able to play second base practically every game while doubling as a corner outfielder.

The All-Star plays well in the infield and the outfield. His bat could stick in the lineup, too. The Cardinals would likely be asking a lot in return for the veteran, but it’s a price worth paying for the Giants.
