The Boston Red Sox have activated outfielder from injured list and sent infielder Nick Sogard down to Triple-A Worcester. O’Neill, 29, returned to the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, where he batted third and played left field.
He had been sidelined for over two weeks due to a left leg infection and did not undergo a rehab assignment before coming back. This season with Boston, O’Neill is hitting .268 with 22 home runs and 45 RBIs in 80 games. Drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the third round of the 2013 draft, O’Neill has a career .251 batting average with 100 home runs and 262 RBIs across seven seasons (557 games) with the St. Louis Cardinals (2018-23) and Red Sox (2023-present). Sogard, 26, made his major league debut with Boston on August 2 and has a .227 average (10-for-44) with a double and six RBIs in 12 games. Primarily a second baseman, Sogard was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 12th round of the 2019 draft.
