The Chicago Cubs head into the offseason facing more challenges than many teams in Major League Baseball. Craig Counsell’s recent remarks highlighted their primary issue: they need more talent.
Unless some of their young players step up next year, the Cubs have only one viable option: acquiring high-caliber players through trades or signings. To make this happen, they’ll need to be willing to spend money. If not, they’ll be confronting even larger problems.
Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes are the biggest names available this winter. While signing either player wouldn’t solve everything, it would signal to fans that the Cubs are serious about competing.
However, securing Soto could cost around $500 million, and Burnes might command up to $300 million. These prices reflect the value of such elite players. For the Cubs to achieve their goals, they’ll need to invest accordingly.
According to Robert Murray of FanSided, it’s uncertain whether Chicago is prepared to make such significant financial commitments. He noted, “It’s unclear if the Cubs will have the appetite to sign any player for a contract north of $500 million, making Soto a difficult fit. However, Burnes would be a smart priority for the Cubs given their need for top-tier starting pitchers. He’s among the best in baseball and has a connection with Counsell, which would strengthen their rotation alongside Justin Steele and Shota Imanaga.”
While Murray’s endorsement of Burnes as a top target is logical given their previous collaboration with the Brewers, it doesn’t guarantee that Burnes will accept a $220 million deal when higher offers are on the table.
As the offseason approaches, the Cubs will be under intense scrutiny. This past year was disappointing, and it’s crucial that the ownership and front office grasp Counsell’s message. Failing to do so could lead to yet another frustrating season for a fan base that deserves better.
