The Edmonton Oilers kicked off their on-ice training camp, with a new player making an appearance at practice. Jason Gregor reports that the team has signed centreman to a professional tryout contract.
He was selected in the fourth round by the San Jose Sharks in 2018 and has primarily played in the AHL throughout his career. Now 26, he appeared in 50 games for the Sharks during the 2021-22 season, registering 5 goals and 11 points. Last year, he played 66 AHL games, scoring 12 goals and totaling 25 points.
In addition, the Oilers announced yesterday that they have signed veteran forward Mike Hoffman to a tryout contract. Bringing in two forwards for tryouts may seem unexpected given the team’s depth, but it indicates that the front office is looking to boost competition during training camp and the upcoming season with both Jasper Weatherby and Mike Hoffman
The Oilers’ fourth line is expected to feature Derek Ryan, Corey Perry, and Vasily Podkolzin. With two of those forwards nearing 40, it might be a good opportunity for the team to infuse some youth and speed. Players like Raphael Lavoie, Noah Philp, Lane Pederson, and the two newcomers on PTOs will be vying for spots during training camp. Increasing internal competition is always a smart strategy!
