Boston has expressed a willingness to explore all options this winter, indicating that the Red Sox will likely be active in free agency and could pursue one or more trades. This offseason is crucial for the team, as it could help them return to contention.
The Red Sox clearly need more right-handed power in their lineup, and FanSided’s Josh Jacobs suggested a trade for All-Star catcher Willson Contreras from the St. Louis Cardinals as a compelling possibility.
“Once free agency opens, Juan Soto stands out as the top hitter available, but he may demand a contract exceeding $500 million,” Jacobs noted. “The next best option could be Pete Alonso, but he would also require a hefty deal. Beyond Alex Bregman or Willy Adames, the options for bolstering the lineup quickly dwindle. Contreras has three years left on his contract at $18 million annually, with a club option for $17.5 million in 2028.
“I haven’t mentioned many teams here, but when considering Contreras, teams like the Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants, Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, Washington Nationals, Toronto Blue Jays, Red Sox, and even the Tampa Bay Rays come to mind as potential fits for a power hitter. While Contreras would need to approve any trade, I find it hard to believe the Cardinals wouldn’t receive a valuable return for him.”
Despite playing only 84 games last season, Contreras hit 15 home runs and drove in 36 RBIs. He is a formidable right-handed hitter who could be a good fit for Boston if the price is right.
