The Green Bay Packers fell 34-29 to the Philadelphia Eagles in their season opener, and they might face upcoming games without their star quarterback.
Jordan Love left the game with just six seconds remaining, and multiple reports on Saturday suggested he has a sprained medial collateral ligament. While Love is expected to be out for a few weeks, his season is not at risk, according to a source who spoke with USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity since the injury has not been officially confirmed.
When asked about Love’s condition after the game, Packers coach Matt LaFleur replied, “I don’t know.”
With 15 seconds left and the Packers on their own 49-yard line, Love attempted to extend the play to find an open receiver. He was hit low by Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter and high by edge rusher Josh Sweat, causing him to fall awkwardly.
Despite the hit, Love managed to pass the ball to running back Josh Jacobs before hitting the ground.
The quarterback appeared to be in significant pain as he remained on the field. Green Bay’s medical staff attended to him briefly before he walked off with Jacobs and a team staff member supporting him.
Backup Malik Willis took over for the final two plays, and he was sacked on the last play as time ran out.
Love was escorted to the tunnel after the game. He recorded 260 passing yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
Josh Jacobs commented, “Obviously, you don’t want to see the leader of your team get hurt. We don’t know the severity of his injury, but hopefully he’s OK.”
The Packers recently signed Love, 25, to a four-year, $220 million extension in July, making him one of the highest-paid players in the league. Love had an impressive first season as a starter, leading Green Bay to the playoffs and becoming only the third NFL quarterback to exceed 4,000 passing yards and 32 touchdowns in his initial season with multiple starts.
The Packers, now 0-1, will face the Indianapolis Colts in Week 2.
