The Green Bay Packers need to focus on strengthening their backup quarterback position.
Ideally, Jordan Love will handle all significant snaps for the team this season, especially since he was made the highest-paid player in franchise history for a reason. However, in the NFL, it’s crucial to have a reliable backup.
During the preseason, the Packers let two quarterbacks with no NFL experience compete for the backup role, and neither performed well. They’ve since cut rookie Michael Pratt and appear to have Sean Clifford as the current second-string QB, but there must be a better option available.
On Wednesday, the Cleveland Browns offered a potential solution. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Browns released quarterback Tyler Huntley, addressing their own crowded roster. Huntley, a former playoff starter for the Baltimore Ravens, is now available and could be a strong addition for teams like Green Bay seeking to bolster their backup position.
Huntley’s profile matches what the Packers need in a backup quarterback.
While his Pro Bowl selection in 2022 was somewhat inflated due to several AFC quarterbacks opting out, Huntley has demonstrated his ability to step in for star quarterback Lamar Jackson. He helped secure a playoff berth for the Ravens that season with a 2-2 record in the final games.
Over his career, the 26-year-old Huntley has played in 21 games, including the postseason, with 10 starts. He boasts a 64.6% completion rate in the regular season, with eight touchdowns, seven interceptions, and 509 rushing yards.
Should the Packers need to replace an injured Love, head coach Matt LaFleur would likely feel more at ease with Huntley as the backup. If another team doesn’t snap him up first, Huntley should definitely be in green and gold this fall.
