The New York Yankees have a strong opportunity to make a significant impact this fall.
Recently, the Yankees have been performing well and appear to be genuine contenders for the World Series. They have the potential to achieve something remarkable this season, but they’ll need to reassess their strategy during the winter.
In the offseason, the Yankees will need to address their infield, either through free agency or trades. One player who has previously been linked to the Yankees and will be available is San Francisco Giants’ third baseman Matt Chapman. According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Chapman is expected to test free agency.
Feinsand noted, “Matt Chapman, 3B, Giants. Remaining contract: 2 years, $35 million. Age at the start of the 2025 season: 31. After a slow start (.599 OPS in his first 44 games), Chapman has been highly productive, hitting 15 home runs and posting an .872 OPS over his last 82 games.
Chapman was among the ‘Boras Four’ who waited until late last offseason to sign a three-year, $54 million deal, which includes player options for 2025 ($17 million, $2 million buyout) and 2026 ($18 million, $3 million buyout). Unless he suffers an injury or has a disappointing finish to the year, Chapman could be a free agent again entering his age-32 season.”
Chapman was considered a good match for the Yankees last offseason and could still be a viable option. With the Yankees acquiring Jazz Chisholm Jr. before the trade deadline, who has played some third base, moving him back to second base in 2025 might make bringing in a third baseman like Chapman a logical move.
