Kentucky Basketball appears to be in a strong position to secure another significant recruiting commitment as it continues building its roster for the 2026-27 season.
The Wildcats recently emerged as a serious contender for Serbian prospect , a highly regarded 6-foot-9 wing who has quickly become one of the most talked-about international players in his age group. Kusturica is already drawing attention from NBA scouts and talent evaluators, making him one of the premier young prospects available. Although Kentucky has made considerable progress in his recruitment, Gonzaga had long been viewed as the favorite because the Bulldogs began recruiting him earlier and currently have a greater need for a player with his skill set.
That perception may now be changing. According to 247Sports recruiting analyst Travis Branham, Kentucky has gained significant momentum in the race for Kusturica. Branham recently entered a prediction in favor of the Wildcats landing the talented Serbian, assigning a confidence rating of 7 out of 10. While recruiting predictions are never guarantees, they often provide insight into the direction a recruitment is heading. If Kentucky ultimately secures Kusturica’s commitment, it would represent one of the most important additions of the cycle and further validate the recruiting efforts of head coach Mark Pope and his staff.
Such a commitment would be especially meaningful considering the challenges Kentucky faced earlier in the offseason. Despite some initial setbacks and uncertainty surrounding roster construction, Pope and his coaching staff have responded by assembling an increasingly impressive group of talent. Adding a player of Kusturica’s caliber would further strengthen the Wildcats’ future outlook and reinforce the momentum the program has built in recent months.
Kusturica’s reputation skyrocketed following his dominant performance at the 2025 FIBA U16 EuroBasket Tournament. Competing against some of the best young players in Europe, he averaged 20.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.1 steals per game while playing 25.6 minutes per contest. He also displayed impressive efficiency, shooting 49.5 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from three-point range. His ability to impact games in multiple ways helped lead his team and earned him Most Valuable Player honors for the tournament.
Those performances have significantly elevated his standing among scouts and talent evaluators. Many recruiting experts now view Kusturica as one of the elite prospects in his age group, and his long-term NBA outlook continues to improve. Early projections for the 2028 NBA Draft have him firmly in lottery-pick territory, reflecting both his current production and his considerable developmental upside.
In fact, NBA Draft Room currently projects Kusturica as the No. 2 overall selection in the 2028 NBA Draft. While draft projections several years into the future should always be viewed cautiously, being ranked that highly at such a young age speaks volumes about the level of talent he possesses. Evaluators are impressed by his size, versatility, scoring ability, court vision, and overall feel for the game, all of which have contributed to his rapid rise on recruiting and draft boards.
Because Kusturica only recently turned 17 years old, NBA eligibility rules would require him to spend at least two seasons at the collegiate level before entering the draft. That means the program that ultimately lands him could benefit from multiple years of high-level production rather than a one-and-done season. Given his trajectory, there is a strong possibility that he develops into one of the most impactful players in college basketball before eventually making the leap to the professional ranks.
At this stage, Kentucky appears to be in an increasingly favorable position. While his recruitment has not yet been finalized and other programs remain involved, the recent prediction from Branham suggests that the Wildcats may have taken the lead. If that momentum continues, Mark Pope and Kentucky could soon add one of the most talented international prospects in basketball to an already promising future roster.
