According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the San Francisco Giants have traded All-Star second baseman to the Philadelphia Phillies in one of the most significant offensive moves made before the MLB trade deadline. The acquisition gives Philadelphia one of the game’s premier contact hitters as the club looks to strengthen its lineup for the postseason push.
Arraez, 29, has once again been among the most productive hitters in baseball this season. He earned another All-Star selection after batting a major league-leading .324 with four home runs, 43 RBIs and an .801 OPS through 105 games with the Giants. His ability to consistently put the ball in play and reach base makes him a valuable addition to a Phillies lineup that has been searching for more offensive consistency.
The 5-foot-10 left-handed hitter is in the final season of a one-year, $12 million contract and is scheduled to become a free agent following the 2026 campaign. While he may only be a short-term addition, Philadelphia is betting that his elite bat can help make an immediate impact during the stretch run and into October.
Beyond his offensive production, Arraez has also improved defensively at second base. Teams interested in acquiring him were reportedly aware that he preferred to remain at his natural position, and the Phillies were willing to accommodate that request. Arraez originally signed with the Minnesota Twins as an international free agent in 2013 and steadily developed into one of baseball’s most accomplished pure hitters. Over eight major league seasons with the Twins, Miami Marlins, San Diego Padres and Giants, he has compiled a career batting average of .XXX with XX home runs and XXX RBIs while establishing himself as one of the toughest players in the league to strike out.
His résumé includes four All-Star selections and three batting titles. He won the American League batting crown with the Twins in 2022 before capturing National League batting championships in consecutive seasons, hitting .354 for the Marlins in 2023 and .314 for the Padres in 2024. Those accomplishments made him one of the few players in recent history to win batting titles in both leagues.
Arraez has also been recognized for his offensive excellence with two Silver Slugger Awards, earning the honor with Minnesota in 2022 and Miami in 2023. His remarkable bat-to-ball skills, disciplined approach and consistent production have made him one of the most respected hitters in the majors.
For the Phillies, adding a proven hitter of Arraez’s caliber signals a clear commitment to contending this season.
