The Seattle Mariners are expected to pursue a major roster move to fill the infield void left by Jorge Polanco and Eugenio Suárez. While free agency offers some possibilities, Seattle appears more likely to explore trade options. Going the trade route could help the team cut costs rather than committing to a high-priced free agent such as Alex Bregman.
FanSided writer Christopher Kline reveal that the Mariners will make a splash this offseason by acquiring St. Louis Cardinals standout infielder Brendan Donovan.
“The St. Louis Cardinals are undergoing a comprehensive rebuild. Their best asset is Brendan Donovan, a supercharged utility player who finished last season with a .775 OPS and 119 OPS+,” Kline wrote. “He can spend time at second base or in the outfield and he’s under club control through 2027.
“New Cardinals GM Chaim Bloom needs to dial up the Mariners, who boast the deepest reservoir of high-level pitching prospects in MLB. The M’s need a potential Jorge Polanco replacement and would benefit from Donovan’s ability to flex to the outfield. St. Louis needs a major influx of rotation-level talent. It’s a match made in heaven.”
Donovan would fit perfectly in the Mariners’ infield. He’s a very good infielder with a lot of defensive versatility. In Seattle, he’d likely replace Polanco at second base, but there’s a chance he could play anywhere on the infield dirt or either corner outfield spot.
The Mariners have the prospect capital to get a deal done, too. They could ship away a pitching prospect and a top position player prospect to get the deal done.
