The New York Mets have received another setback involving one of their high-profile offseason additions, with veteran reliever being placed on the 15-day injured list.
According to Heavy, the Mets announced Monday that Williams is dealing with a right shoulder strain. The transaction was made retroactive to August 8, meaning his most recent appearance came one day before the move.
The injury adds to what has already been a disappointing season for Williams in New York. The former All-Star joined the Mets on a three-year, $51 million contract after struggling during his lone season with the New York Yankees in 2025.
Williams had established himself as one of baseball’s premier relievers during his time with the Milwaukee Brewers. He earned All-Star selections in 2022 and 2023 and posted a 1.83 ERA across 241 appearances over six seasons with Milwaukee.
However, his performance has declined significantly since leaving the Brewers. He recorded a 4.79 ERA over 62 innings with the Yankees in 2025, and his struggles have continued with the Mets this season.
Through 42 appearances in 2026, Williams has posted a 4.66 ERA over 38.2 innings while allowing 43 hits. Those numbers have fallen well short of what the Mets expected when they committed $51 million to the veteran reliever.
The shoulder injury now gives Williams another obstacle to overcome as he looks to regain the form that once made him one of the most dominant bullpen arms in MLB. At 31 years old, however, there remains hope that he can recover and eventually return to being a reliable late-inning option for New York.
