On Sunday night against the Houston Texans, Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta put up a season-high 66 yards on three receptions, including a touchdown, despite a tough matchup in fantasy football terms.
However, LaPorta left the game in the third quarter after making a 37-yard catch that set up a David Montgomery touchdown. He was later deemed questionable to return and did not re-enter the game.
Following the game, Lions head coach Dan Campbell provided an update on LaPorta’s shoulder injury. “I don’t know how significant it will be, but it’s not like he’s going to be out for four weeks,” Campbell said. “He might miss this week, but we’ll see. He has a little sprain in the AC joint area. He tried to go back in but it didn’t feel right, so we’ll get it checked out tomorrow and take it day-to-day.”
LaPorta was seen in the locker room after the game, not using his left arm much, though he only said that post-game tests showed “nothing major” with his shoulder. He was later spotted leaving the locker room with a sling on his arm.
LaPorta is set to undergo additional tests on Monday, which should clarify his availability for Week 11 against the Jacksonville Jaguars and beyond.
LaPorta has already shown his toughness early in his career, playing through a knee injury last season without missing any playoff games. Despite dealing with a hamstring issue in training camp and a sprained ankle in Week 3, he has not missed any game time. While there’s a chance he may miss the upcoming game against the Jaguars, the Lions are likely to take a cautious approach, as his shoulder injury doesn’t seem to be serious. If he does sit out, the team should still be able to manage without him, especially after their dramatic win over the Texans.
