The Boston Bruins made several key changes during the off-season. They acquired a new first-line center, Elias Lindholm, who has performed well early in the season. Additionally, they signed tough left-shot defenseman Nikita Zadorov, filling a crucial need. Right before the regular season began, they successfully negotiated an eight-year contract with star goalie Jeremy Swayman.
Overall, the Bruins have strengthened their roster in various ways and aim to make a significant impact in the Eastern Conference this year. However, it’s clear they need another top-six winger after losing Jake DeBrusk during the off-season.
One intriguing player to watch is Andrei Kuzmenko, a winger for the Calgary Flames. After not fitting in with the Vancouver Canucks last season, he was traded to the Flames in the deal that brought Lindholm to Boston. Since joining Calgary, Kuzmenko has made a strong comeback, proving he can be a valuable top-six winger. In the 29 games he played for the Flames after the trade, he scored 14 goals and tallied 25 points.
Kuzmenko has continued to shine this season, recording four assists and a plus-2 rating in just two games. In his first NHL season (2022-23) with the Canucks, he was outstanding, finishing with 39 goals and 74 points in 81 games. When he’s on his game, Kuzmenko is a significant offensive asset.
With the Flames in a rebuilding phase, there’s a good chance Kuzmenko—a pending unrestricted free agent—could become available for trade this season. If he does, the Bruins should seriously consider pursuing him. He would be an excellent fit for their second-right wing position, but the Original Six team would need to find a way to manage the financial aspects.
