The top superstar faced a setback just days before the Boston Bruins’ season opener, which was unfortunate as he aimed to secure a spot on the team. Coach Jim Montgomery mentioned that the 20-year-old is “day-to-day” due to an undisclosed injury. It’s unclear if the injury occurred during his last game on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Flyers, but he was not in the lineup for Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings.
Poitras had expressed his desire to make it tough for the Bruins to decide on sending him to Providence for more development. Both general manager Don Sweeney and Montgomery are continually assessing the roster, though the coach seemed unconcerned about Poitras’ position.
Montgomery stated, “I don’t think his availability is gonna affect whether he starts the season here (in Boston) or not,” during a press briefing.
Regarding Poitras’ potential return on Tuesday, Montgomery noted, “I can’t say yes or no. He’s day-to-day, so he’s not back yet. If he does return by Saturday, he’ll need to practice on Saturday and Monday before playing on Tuesday, but I’m not sure.”
Montgomery’s comments should reassure fans that Poitras will likely start the 2024-25 season with the Bruins. He has tested out as a right wing in preseason but can also fit as a third-line center if that’s the plan. Regardless of where he plays, he aims to build on the promise he showed during his rookie year.
