JUST IN: Huge Blow, Capitals Confirm Bad News

The Washington Capitals and their fans are anxiously waiting for updates after Alex Ovechkin appeared to get injured during an informal skate on Monday, September 16.

As reported by Sammi Silber from The Hockey News, Ovechkin left the ice in clear discomfort just minutes into the session with his teammates. “Just minutes into Monday’s informal skate, Alex Ovechkin exited the ice,” Silber wrote on X. “He seemed to wince and pull back during his first drill before heading to the locker room.”

This incident sparked speculation about Ovechkin’s condition, especially with training camp starting soon. Silber provided a brief update three hours later but had little new information to share.

“There’s no official update right now; I’m reporting what I witnessed,” Silber noted. She emphasized that Ovechkin didn’t fall in “massive pain,” but he did “wince and leave,” making it clear she was just sharing what she saw.

Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin (8) against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Ovechkin, who celebrated his 39th birthday on September 17, is close to a significant NHL milestone, currently at 853 career goals—41 short of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record. Last season, he recorded 31 goals and 34 assists in 79 games, and there are high hopes he might break Gretzky’s record this season.

To achieve this, he needs to stay healthy and maintain a strong level of performance as he approaches the end of his career. Ovechkin has scored 31, 42, and 50 goals over the past three seasons, so he’ll need to keep up that scoring pace to surpass the record in 2024-25, or he may have to wait another year for another attempt.
