The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to be active buyers ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline, and they’ve already made a pair of notable roster decisions involving pitching prospects Alex McFarlane and Jose Familia.
After pulling ahead of the New York Mets, the Phillies have shifted their attention toward catching the Los Angeles Dodgers. With postseason aspirations growing stronger, Philadelphia knows it must first overcome the Atlanta Braves in the NL East. At the same time, they can’t afford to overlook the Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals, who remain within striking distance in the division race.
Sometimes the best thing for an organization is to add a player. Other times, it’s best to just let go.
The latter appears to be the case with Familia. The organization released the 6-foot-2, 163-pound shortstop from its organization. It’s been an underreported move, as it doesn’t contain the same kind of flash and pizzazz as a new signing or draft selection.
Jose Familia’s Tenure With the Phillies
This move comes less than two years after the Phillies brought him into the organization.
Philadelphia signed Familia on January 15, 2024, and he spent three seasons in the club’s farm system. He opened his professional career in the Dominican Summer League before earning a promotion to the Florida Complex League in 2025, where he remained until the organization decided to part ways with him.
Across 133 games in the Phillies’ minor league system, Familia hit .185 while collecting 77 hits, six home runs, 34 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases before his release.
