Avalanche gifted player is expected to make his highly awaited return to the Colorado Avalanche lineup on Friday as the team faces the Washington Capitals. Head coach Jared Bednar confirmed the update, which was initially reported by Guerilla Sports.
“It’s been great. I think the guys are excited to get [Nichushkin] back, and Friday is the day. We’re only two games away.”
Nichushkin has been sidelined since May 14th, when he was placed into Stage 3 of the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. This required a six-month suspension from all team activities and pay, with Nichushkin needing to apply for reinstatement once the suspension ended. He rejoined team practices in early November and is now cleared to return to the lineup.
His comeback is crucial for Colorado, as Nichushkin was in exceptional form prior to his absence. He recorded nine goals and ten points in just eight playoff games last year, playing a key role in the Avalanche’s postseason push. His absence was felt heavily, however, as the team was eventually eliminated by the Dallas Stars in Game 6 of their second-round series.
The Avalanche Are Ready To Welcome Nichuskin Back
Although there were initial concerns that Nichushkin’s personal issue might have caused some tension due to its timing, Bednar reassured that the team is excited to have the forward back. And it’s easy to see why — when he’s at his best, Nichushkin is a legitimate top-scoring threat.
Despite previous challenges, the locker room remains supportive of Nichushkin. The Avalanche recognize how crucial he is to their success and are eager for him to return as they work toward a playoff spot. Currently sitting fifth in the Central Division with a 7-8 record, they could certainly benefit from his offensive contributions.
