Accountability has been a key focus for the Chicago Bears this week, with several players expressing criticism of the coaching staff’s decisions in the final moments of their Week 8 loss to the Washington Commanders.
Matt Eberflus attempted to address the situation on Wednesday, but his responses only increased the frustration among Bears fans. Similarly, Shane Waldron displayed a lack of awareness in his remarks to reporters on Thursday.
One of the first questions Waldron faced was about the choice to call a fullback dive for offensive lineman Doug Kramer. Despite Bears running back Roschon Johnson’s flawless track record in goal-line situations, Waldron opted to give the ball to Kramer, who then fumbled. This decision has drawn significant mockery across the NFL this week.
Despite the mocking, Waldron defended the call.
Shane Waldron continues to insult the intelligence of Bears fans.
Waldron’s defiance on Thursday indicates that Matt Eberflus lacks control over his coaching staff. It also suggests that any meetings held between Waldron and the Bears’ offensive captains this week did not achieve their intended goals.
Not only did Waldron defend the decision to give the ball to Kramer, but he also subtly shifted some of the blame onto Caleb Williams for the outcome.
While “accountability” appears to be a buzzword for Eberflus and the Bears’ coaching staff, it isn’t genuinely practiced. Waldron’s refusal on Thursday to acknowledge his mistake in calling for an offensive lineman to carry the ball in a 12-7 game highlights why the Seattle Seahawks were eager to let him go this past offseason.
