In the summer of 2023, Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney had limited cap space, leading him to make several short-term signings. One notable move was giving the forward a two-year contract worth $4 million after the Seattle Kraken extended him a qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent.
His contract came with an average annual value of $2 million. He had a standout season in Boston, scoring 17 goals and providing 22 assists for a total of 39 points. His performance in the playoffs was also impressive, with four goals and five points against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers. As the current season began, the Bruins had high hopes for Geekie, but things have not gone as anticipated.
Jim Montgomery send’s clear and obvious message to Morgan Geekie
In the first eight games of this season, Geekie has recorded just one assist and has a plus/minus rating of minus-4. Coach Jim Montgomery has shuffled him throughout the lineup, but he continues to struggle regardless of his position. Additionally, Geekie has been a healthy scratch at times, a tactic coaches often use to either deliver a message or allow players a brief break. Unfortunately, that approach hasn’t yielded results either. Following Monday’s practice at Warrior Ice Arena, Montgomery candidly addressed the media about what Geekie needs to improve to recapture his performance from the previous season.
“Play better,’’ Montgomery said.
Observing Geekie’s performance this season, it’s clear that improving has been challenging. As reported by Scott McLaughlin of WEEI, Geekie was placed on the third line during Monday’s practice alongside Trent Frederic and Matthew Poitras.
Geekie is in a contract year, and while the Bruins would like to extend their third-round pick from the 2017 Entry Draft, his current performance isn’t making that an easy decision. The team is seeking contributions from players outside of the fourth line, and Geekie demonstrated last season that he could provide that. Boston needs the version of Geekie from last season to make a timely return.
