The Detroit Lions faced an injury scare at the running back position during their Week 7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings when David Montgomery left the game with a knee injury.
Initially, the injury appeared serious, as Montgomery was unable to put weight on his leg and required assistance to exit the field. However, the veteran running back managed to recover quickly, hopping on the exercise bike before rejoining the game.
While it seemed Montgomery might be uncertain for Week 8, head coach Dan Campbell alleviated any concerns during his Monday media availability.
Campbell confirmed that Montgomery is doing well and there’s no worry about his status for the upcoming game. “He’s good,” Campbell stated. “He had some pain, particularly in the area around the knee and the back. After we assessed it, he started feeling better.”
Montgomery was kneed in the back of the knee, resulting in what appears to be a bruise or contusion. “It was more like a bruise, which is great news. He bounced back quickly, and nothing should come from this,” Campbell added.
This is a relief for the Lions, who rely heavily on Montgomery’s skills. Paired with running back Jahmyr Gibbs, they form one of the best one-two punches in the NFL, playing a significant role in the Lions’ high-powered offense.
Expect Montgomery to have a limited practice or two this week as a precaution, but all signs point to him being ready to play against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
